The mill house sits in absolutely enchanting setting, 20 acres in a secluded valley near Falmouth.

The dwelling consisted of an old mill house cut into the hill, with an annex and outbuildings. The existing garden was rather neglected, a small pond near the stream with 1970’s decking surround, dominating thickets of Rhododendron ponticum and laurel.

The Brief:
Initially we were asked along for a consultation, and produced an in depth report, with proposals, which led to producing a detailed design for the immediate gardens and old pond.

The whole project was to be landscape led, any new buildings and developments had to be complementing and harmonising with the wider landscape.

The project grew organically outward from the dwellings, fairly true to the original vision; it included reinstate the original mill pond, landforms, paths, orchards, opening up views and adding screening where necessary. Half way through the project the adjoining farm on the other side of the valley came up for sale and was brought to stop developers ruining the valley. This was brought into an amended vision.

The Design:
With such a project and the nature of the funding, it had to be undertaken in stages. In reality project like this take a lifetime and I was evolved for 7 thoroughly enjoyable years.

I go into more detail in the blog, the first pond was key to everything and was what you saw when you came up the drive to the house. We dismantled the old pond surround and dredged the pond to see what we had. I knew what I wanted to create was a sense of timelessness, as if the gardens belonged and where a natural part of the landscape. To aid, this I need old worn granite boulders, scattered through the valley bed, like glacial moraine, not over done but linking the various areas, like a broken necklace strew across the valley floor. My favourite past time stone hunting! It took time to accumulate a sufficient pallet of material to start work.
